Bill Murray is the novel Scrooge in the classic myth done yet again. I remember a reviewer giving it a extreme rating because he said it seemed as though Murray’s character really didn’t like people. Helllooo, isn’t that what actors are supposed to do? This version of the primitive Chrsitmas fable is a valid retelling of the tale. Murray is mean to everyone including his only brother (played by his precise younger brother) . The 3 spirits that visit Frank Unsuitable (Murray’s role) are wacky to say the least. Carol Kane plays the ghost of Christmas exhibit and is probably the funniest of the spirits. Murray has this act down pat. He’s a sizable t.v. exec and fires Elliot Laudermilk (Bobcat Goldthwait) unbiased for disagreeing with him. By the design, his fires Laudermilk on Christmas eve.

Alfre Woodard plays his longsuffering assistant and tries to be Cross’ conscience since he doesn’t have one of his bear. In the visit to Christmas past we learn that television played the biggest role in raising him since his parents weren’t the greatest in the world. Christmas doesn’t mean grand because his parents didn’t place up Christmas lights, catch a tree or find him presents. His father does advance home one night and descend a package of veal in front of him as a Christmas gift but the young Frank Wicked tells his dad that he wanted a choo-choo assert. His dad, a butcher, (played by Brain Doyle Murray, Bill Murray’s exact life brother) is totally unsympathetic and suggests that his son glean a job even though he’s only four.

Parents Advisory: There is no nudity or sex. However, there is a runt bit of faulty language. It may frighten very young children. I suggest a viewing age of at least thirteen.

Since the first time I ever saw this movie, I have watched it a few times a year, never dumb of the original grasp on the Dickens classic. Bill Murray is excellently cast as icy hearted TV exec Frank Ghastly and with each scene, the movie draws you ever-closer to the Christmas feeling.

I discover this EVERY Christmas Eve and no matter how dreadful a year you’ve had, by the time this movie finishes and it’s time to go to bed before Father Christmas comes, you’ll be in the apt Spirit of the Season.

For those viewers who fondly remember, and miss, Robert Duvall’s role as Augustus McCrae in the 1989 TV miniseries LONESOME DOVE, assume heart. Duvall is benefit in the saddle again as “Boss” Spearman in Begin RANGE. It’s been intention too long.

The lead role in this western actually belongs to Kevin Costner, who plays Spearman’s plug partner and employee, Charlie Waite. It would be hard to decide between the better performance - Costner or Duvall - both playing characters so strong, self-reliant and still that neither knows the other’s pudgy name. And they’ve been riding the West together for ten years! Nor does Boss know Charlie’s violent history, which included being a Civil War raider, and then a hired gun worthy like the ones now working for Baxter. When Charlie falls in esteem with Sue (Annette Bening), the spinster sister of the local sawbones, his guilt over his rough-edged past is a self-imposed handicap that Sue, who sees Waite’s inner goodness, must overcome.

Moviegoers accustomed to a accurate diet of mindless, FX-laden action thrillers may accept the first three-quarters of Commence RANGE listless going. My only complaint lies with the editing, which left in one too many leave-takings between Charlie and Sue, the last being completely superfluous. That said, however, this is a five-star tribute to loyalty, rugged individualism, integrity, and simply doing what’s moral. I judge, sometimes, that Hollywood has forgotten what those qualities are all about.

For all the hits and misses he has had in front of and slow the camera, Kevin Costner never fails to achieve his money where his mouth is. Such is the case with Commence RANGE, which I hope will revive that most American of film genres, the Western.

Set in 1882, Start RANGE stars Costner and musty Robert Duvall as cattlemen only trying to drive their cattle across the launch prairie of Montana. But they soon accelerate afoul of a ruthless land baron (Michael Gambon) out to rid the land of free-grazers like Duvall and Costner; and to demonstrate his point, Gambon has one of Duvall’s men (Abraham Benrubi) killed and another (Diego Luna) seriously wounded. Disney’s last hand-drawn feature isn’t a Disney film at all; it’s an attempt to produce a Warner Brothers Looney Tune feature, which is as dusky an raze to Disney’s legacy as I can consider of. To abandon all that made the studio titanic and try to ape another’s success is a determined heed of management’s faithlessness in Disney’s legacy.

Things open off well enough when a decidedly unlucky rabbit continually gets into ever more hilarious situations (getting speed over by a wagon wheel, stuck by a cactus, bitten by a snake, you rep the belief) . It was the one moment in the film where the audience as a whole was laughing. But after this sequence, I only heard sporadic chuckles.

Although the speedily waddle and simplistic fable accurately mimic the Looney Tunes shorts, the characters aren’t nearly as attractive. None have charisma of Bugs, Daffy or even Pepe Le Peu. Without strong characters the comedy comes off hollow and didn’t acquire my (nor the audiences’ it seemed) interest. The film is a brisk 71 minutes or so, but I was looking at my glimpse anyways. Someone sitting next to me even fell asleep!

There seems to be a general lack of imagination in this film. The one exception being the completely unexpected diagram in which the cows are being stolen. It’s a grand notion that had the potential to be classic moment in Disney animation, but feels roped in, constipated, as if the filmmakers were haunted to trust the belief and let it guide the action.

Young children will mostly be pleased this film while it lasts but it’s definite to be forgotten soon afterward. There are a few jokes that are meant for older audiences, but it’s not enough to fabricate a lasting impression. This film will be best enjoyed on DVD as a babysitter.

I am in that period of my life where I am watching a lot of children’s programming. The tendency is to initiate to impose my possess adult tastes on these children’s movies. I reflect this is because the bar has been raised with Shrek and other movies that plant plenty of jokes for the parents.

After being locked up for twenty years she is now free and supposedly sane. However, unfamiliar occurances commence that invent it discover like Lucy has gone over the edge again. Joan gives a big performance here. Well, let’s face it, she never gave a terrible one regardless of the movie itself.

Several of these films have been on DVD before, and when they were released several came with featurettes, so I’m hoping at least that grand gets carried over into the novel boxed plot. Specifically there were short featurettes on the fresh Sardonicus, Homicidal, 13 Ghosts, Tingler, and Strait-Jacket.

Now if only whoever it was who owned the rights to the 1958 Castle film Macabre would assure a DVD release.

William Castle wasn’t simply a film maker. William Castle was a showman. So distinguished so that going to the opening of one of his films was an event as opposed to going to a movie. Special stunts were what Castle was illustrious for and several of these films featured those. While audiences can’t enjoy the shows he place on in theaters these days, they can net enjoyment in his films on DVD with the release of THE WILLIAM CASTLE FILM COLLECTION from Sony.

This collection may not include all of his films but it does include a number of his better pictures as well as several never before released to DVD. And those that have already been released are given a well deserved treatment here by including them in this collection. So what’s in it? Eight movies for young and ancient.

First off is 13 Shy GIRLS. The fetch here was Castle’s search for girls from around the world to picture the members of an all girl boarding school who pick up enthusiastic in sight shenanigans. Light on scares and mountainous on chuckles, the film is a rude dose of Castle.

13 GHOSTS tells the myth of down on his luck father who inherits a house from a rich uncle, only if he stays there. Too dreadful that this same uncle made a habit of collecting ghosts, 12 of which can be found there now. And the 13th? Stare to obtain out. The trick here was a spot of glasses with blue and red lenses, one to allow you to survey the ghosts, the other to block them out.

HOMICIDAL was Castle’s acknowledge to Hitchcock’s PSYCHO. The film opens with a brutal kill of a justice of the peace by a young woman who returns home to care for an invalid woman. The face of Mr. Sardonicus gave me nightmares for years!

THE TINGLER features Vincent Note in a role that gives him a chance to develop even some of the lamest dialogue sound Shakespearean. As a scientists who discovers that apprehension gives birth to a creature that literally squeezes your spine unless you release that fright by screaming, Heed is amazing. The immense gimmick here was in win theaters that had definite seats with vibrating mechanisms placed under chairs. At one point in the film, in a theater, the veil goes murky and Impress calls out that the Tingler is lose in the theater you are in! If you feel it you should wail, weep for your life! Of course this was when the mechanisms would buzz, scaring theater patrons.

Lastly is ZOTZ! again starring Tom Posten. This time around Posten is a language professor whose niece receives a medallion from her boyfriend on an archeological dig. An old-fashioned language is found on the medallion and Posten deciphers it to spy that by pointing at someone he can cause internal injure, by saying zotz he can construct them disappear slowly and by doing the two together he can cause death! When the government doesn’t pay attention to him the Russians do and attempt a kidnapping.

Included in this collection are several episodes of Castle produced TV shows, late the scenes featurettes on the movies and a gigantic documentary about Castle himself. The master showman took to appearing in most of his films and getting a kick out of the fans reactions to them all. Many fans have gone on to become star film directors in their acquire accurate.

This collection might be a bit pricy, but to catch each film on its fill would cost more. Clive Barker adaptations are usually even more hit and miss than Stephen King ones. The last one we had was the surprisingly salubrious (and dreadfully underrated) Midnight Meat Tell, and now here we are Book of Blood. The record of this film revolves around a college student named Simon (Jonas Armstrong) able to channel the dumb, who is brought to a supposed shy house by his professor (Sophie Ward) . This whole chronicle is told by Simon to a demented man (Clive Russell) who has been hired to gain Simon’s scarred up skin. As far as Barker adaptations go, Book of Blood isn’t all dreadful, as it does provide some beneficial scares and well-done gore effects. Where it falters however is the fact that the film as a whole is poorly paced, and the twist ending really doesn’t reach as too considerable of a surprise either if you judge about it. Unexcited, Book of Blood isn’t all poor, and if you’re a Clive Barker fan, you could do a whole lot worse. Peek for Doug “Pinhead” Bradley in a blink-and-you-miss-him cameo.

This isn’t a remake or a sequel. Instead it is a splendid movie. Sticking quite faithfully to the current short narrative by Clive Barker, this is a well made and often disturbing film. Astronomical performances by the cast, an expedient script, a haunting gain and some testy photography all work together to effect this one of the better adaptations of a Barker fable. The Bluray, while not exactly spy candy, is a faithful reproduction of the directors intentions and all the scenes are consuming and decent looking. Not remarkable in the draw of extra features but the included documentary is fairly thorough if a bit short. All in all a tremendous film and an valid transfer.

I had the privilege of seeing this good film last week at the AFI Silver Theater, which recently ran a month-long tribute to the unhurried, gargantuan director Elia Kazan. Kazan is important for his collaborations with a young Marlon Brando, directing the rising star in three films during the early 50s: “A Streetcar Named Desire,” “Viva Zapata!” and the masterpiece “On the Waterfront.” Many film critics save “Baby Doll” correct late “On the Waterfront” when ranking Kazan’s filmography. Having seen it, I would likely do the same (though I haven’t seen all of Kazan’s films yet) .

Eli Wallach, who plays Silva Vaccaro in “Baby Doll,” was on hand to introduce the film at the AFI Silver. He spoke for about 45 minutes and, though he’s in his 80s, had the audience (about 40 or 50 of us) roaring with laughter. I was amazed at how many top actors and directors he’s worked with. He spoke mainly about “Baby Doll,” which he says is his approved film.

Here are a few things I learned from Eli Wallach about “Baby Doll”: His hands were NOT anywhere approach Carroll Baker’s private parts during the notoriously erotic swing scene, as reported in many a film review at the time. Rather, they were resting on a residence heater; though “Baby Doll” takes position in the heat of summer, the film was shot during winter. In fact, the actors had to suck on ice cubes before each retract so their breath wouldn’t expose. Wallach spent more time in the iconic baby crib than Baby Doll herself. This was Wallach’s first film.

“Baby Doll” is based on two one-act plays by Tennessee Williams: “27 Wagons Rotund of Cotton” and “The Unsatisfactory Supper.” Anyone familiar with Tennessee Williams knows that his writing is very southern and very steamy. “Baby Doll” may be the steamiest, most erotic thing he ever wrote.

The owner of a private cotton gin, Archie Lee, has his hands beefy with “child bride” Baby Doll, who sleeps in a crib and won’t let her husband touch her until she turns 20. With her birthday in a few days, Baby Doll, played by the impossibly-cute Carroll Baker, is threatening to “maintain” unless her aging, doltish husband starts raking in the dough. After their furniture is hauled off, Lee, played by Karl Malden, sets fire to the novel cotton gin that’s been taking away his business. Silva Vaccaro, a firey Sicilian businessman played by Eli Wallach, vows to true revenge on the person who burned down his gin. Suspicions lead him directly to Lee’s doorstep where, over the course of an afternoon, he proceeds to kill the man’s life.

The heart of the movie is Vaccaro’s seduction of Baby Doll. No flesh is ever shown, nothing explicit is ever uttered and I fill there’s only one kiss in the entire film. Regardless, this is some of the hottest, most erotic footage in American film. The dialogue, the acting, the map it’s directed: the overall attain is like watching passionate sex, yet it’s simply two people talking - and they’re not even talking about sex! To me, this type of filmmaking is magical, when the director conjures something out of thin air that isn’t even there.

“Baby Doll” was highly, highly controversial upon its release in 1956. It was condemned by The Legion of Decency, an organization of the Roman Catholic Church, who claimed that it was evil. Because of the hype, it was withdrawn from over 70 percent of U.S. theaters before its premiere. Several film critics at the time called it the most pornographic film ever released by a film studio. Today however, very few would likely salvage in a fuss over it.

“Baby Doll” is a immense film that now ranks among my favorites of all time. It’s not only sexy, but very laughable, well-acted, well-written and expertly directed. It may seem a minute dated to most original viewers, but I personally assume it holds up quite well (but then, I do spy a lot of archaic films.) If and when “Baby Doll” is produced for DVD, I hope the studio considers Eli Wallach for the audio commentary.

This review isn’t of the grand movies contained but the DVD place and their respective presentations.

first..let me say the bonus DVD “Tennesse Williams South”…is exceptional..its a film made about and with him in 1974 and besides his occupy readings of his work, which are illuminating, it features legends like Burl Ives and Jessica Tandy re-creating his dialog..simply timeless!

now..onto the Discs/Movies

the bonus featurettes are all very well done however, seemingly shorter than they should/could be. By that I mean…they have modern interviews with Karl Malden and Eli Wallach for BABYDOLL and Rip Torn for Sweet Bird of Youth and the ever handsome Jill St John for The Roman Spring of Mrs. Stone, and yet the amount of face time these staunch stars of the films in inquire regain is barely a line here or there? Not that the featurettes aren’t helpful…they are..it fair seems they could be a could 10minutes longer each…

now…the opposite pickle is in the second disc of Streetcar Named Desire….the feature length (90min) Elia Kazan: A directors Whisk is extraordinary..its a decade or so customary but was done while he was level-headed with us and his participation raised it above the level of talking heads documentaries of the day. The uncommon thing is that the original featurettes on this disc feature map too noteworthy culled from the aforementioned feature. I don’t understand….WB has astonishing featurettes on all the movies that seem truncated and then BLOATS out the Streetcar featurettes with duplicate material from itself? Only the unusual footage of Karl Malden saves the Streetcar featurettes from their beget plagerism.

Now..the films themselves are all in very wonderful shape considering they go encourage half a century. I wasn’t a particular fan of Tennesse Williams..but after viewing all these films and the bonus film…i most certainly attach him in the genius category and am looking for more.

Also, the press is making a expansive deal about Marlon Brando’s mask test which is being included in the Streetcar DVD bonus features…its only a curiosity, not incredible by any stretch. What is far more attractive is Karl Malden’s blooming memories of his friendship and admiration for Mr Brando….truly touching and mezmorizing. Malden is a fancy of an actor who starred in more splendid films than any but the most ardent fan would know as he was usually second billed…but he IS the star of this position.

Great American films and unlike Universals shameless packaging..WB continues to indicate these types of films lovingly with extras..oh yeah..and the commentaries aren’t abominable either…noteworthy to indulge in in this spot.

The producers of this film knew a generous model when they found it and obviously allowed the audience to laugh at their copycat ways by creating aliens that alternately sight like tongues with teeth and keen intestines. There’s also a paean to the staunch “Alien” advance the waste that Peter Weller does away with by squishing it’s head in an elevator shaft.

And, in the final scene, you won’t gain how hokey and expressionless this kind of movie could be unprejudiced a few years before the advent on high tech and high gloss computerization became de riguer in this type of thing. It’s worth it to sit through the whole thing objective to discover that unbelievably dull final scene.

Weller “starred” in this vehicle two years after his biggest hit, 1987’s “RoboCop”. This didn’t do powerful for his reputation even though the cast included some ample watch candy in Amanda Pays and the steely blue eyes of Meg Foster. A solid supporting cast headed by the sizable Richard Crenna, Ernie Hudson and Hector Elizondo offer a high level of acting credibility.

Still, they can’t accomplish sense of this mishmash which, oddly and fantastically, detached works as fear. Leonard Maltin says to, “Skip it” on this one but I’d disagree. I contemplate there’s enough humor, whether intentional or unintentional, recognize candy, schlock apprehension and stunning acting to give you your money’s worth. It didn’t work as a expansive release in the theater but it’s glorious noble entertainment on a Tuesday night on your home system.

Plot synapsis: Underwater mining rig, day 87 of a 90 day tour, goof-off sexist jerk wanders off and finds a sunken Russian freighter.

The cast consists of Peter Weller as the geologist boss, Richard Crenna as the semi-doctor and crewed by Ernie Hudson (who gets some of the best lines and steals his scenes), Amanda Pays (and her annoyingly fallacious accent) Daniel Stern, Michael Carmine, an adorable Lisa Eilbacher, Meg Foster (what IS it about her eyes? And why was she trying so hard to do a crappy acting job? ), and the amazing Hector Elizondo.

After ALIEN did the paralyzed house in status so successfully there were a lot of immitators. Then we had a few underwater adventures which did fairly well in a vauge sort of diagram. Assume of this as a cheap device of combining both. Except for Pays and Foster, we have a group of really comely actors working in an underwater mining facility.

Personal note: Seriously, if this had been staunch and I was Pays’ charactor I would have severly damage the Stern character. His behavior was borish to the point of distracting from the movie and something no decent boss would have allowed.

Anyway, the movie hide said the magic words: GENETIC MUTATION! I was curved, as always. Pays and Stern are outside doing their job when Stern wanders off (why? ) and falls off a cliff. Movie goers probably cheered at that point. Pays goes after him, wandering through fakey looking sea worms and finds the Russian freighter. I liked the scary fish that pops up in Pays’ face. Stern shows up with a spacious estimable, carrying it like it weighs 20 pounds instead of several hundred and they head succor.

The well-behaved contains a lot of ‘personal effects’ from deceased crewmembers which should have triggered a lot more peril than it did. Sterns character slips out a flask of vodka and hides it. Eilbacher’s character sees him do it, and later talks him into sharing it with her. Because of the crude anguish of the job, alcohol is not permitted there.

Eventually the Crenna figures out the Russians were doing GENETIC EXPERIMENTATION (I appreciate this stuff) on it’s have crew by doctoring their vodka. By the time Crenna comes up with that of course, Stern and Eilbacher are already infected. It hits Stern first, and hardest, then things open getting out of control.

Up to this point the movie does quite well. It’s best effects were, unfortunately, the ones you don’t observe, using shadow and noise. As wonderful as the cast mostly was, the sets, the production, etc., the special effects were really deplorable. Or to place it another contrivance, they were unprejudiced cheesy and dreadful, a jarring tag to an otherwise consuming movie.

There was not a lot of fresh material here, nothing terribly unusual, but it is level-headed not terrible. Flawed by it’s special effects, surely, but some sterling acting and a decent script saves it from being a B movie.

“There goes Roy Hobbs, the best there ever was to play this game.” For admirers of the recent theatrical and, later, DVD version, of “The Natural” this is obviously A MUST. The legend of Roy Hobbs, a enormous young talent in the Ted Williams mode (they even fragment the same number - 9), struck down in his prime, and then, like a phoenix, reborn into athletic glory, is one of the classic American stories of all time, based on the aesthetic recent by Bernard Malamud. This recent “Director’s Sever” version is like revisiting a grand fairy memoir from childhood and being given more - and often longer - scenes with some of your popular characters. Director Barry Levinson explains, in a video introduction to the film, the reasons for this original edition: how the fresh film was somewhat rushed into theatres and how he and his editor (and others) wanted a great different first act to the film. And here it is: the novel footage deepens and darkens and gradually brightens the film into a noteworthy more satisfying experience and smooth does not diminish the impact of the unusual at all. In a word, PERFECT. The musical gain, by the ample Randy Newman, perhaps a shrimp too insistent in the fresh film, cueing us to how we should feel, sneaks up on you more in this version and makes all the incredible moments in the film that near later that powerful more gripping. Also, Robert Redford’s performance as Roy Hobbs is immeasurably helped here: the recent footage (often unusual scenes with more footage added), even positive like a flash cuts, obtain for a more layered, textured performance that gives us greater insights into this alarmed, but superior character - and display how a once, ample, guileless young ballplayer detached exists inside the older, careworn, but mild talented, man he has become. There are gorgeous moments restored here - often wordless - and some modern scenes have been edited, so that even though there is additional footage, the unique version only runs about six minutes longer than the fresh. Personally, I felt all the performances benefited from the original version - Robert Duvall, Kim Basinger, Darren McGavin, Glenn Finish, Wilford Brimley, Richard Farnsworth, all doing exquisite work here. And though my only quibble with the film was - and peaceful is - the somewhat stilted staging of some of the scenes (I would have liked to have seen more reactions from the ballplayers and coaches during games - sometimes they honest inspect blank even when watching something tantalizing going on), this is clearly a Upright classic - and the original version will only add to its glory. The additional special features include a wealth of information about the making of the film, and a fair featurette on “The Mythology of The Natural.” Clearly this is why this film endures - and will for the next 100 years. It has a timeless feel, from the perfect performances, the ample direction, the sure care that was taken in the music, costumes, sets (the extraordinary scenes in the various ballparks), and, finally, to the tale itself, so beautifully articulated by Glenn Close’s character later in the story: “I hold we have two lives: the one we learn with, and the one we live with after that.” This unusual DVD “Director’s Sever” version drives this theme home with the precision of one of Roy Hobbs’s spacious home runs. It is a darker, more textured, but ultimately more illuminating experience (and perhaps even more racy than the fresh version) - and one of Barry Levinson’s finest achievements. I wish they had re-released it on the great cover first. But here it is in a beautifully packaged DVD (with a colossal, ancient conceal), worth every penny, and then some. A broad slam!

I loved the Natural when it came out in 1984. The mythical quality of the narrative, terrific acting by a perfect cast, mountainous editing, and sizable direction made this film one of my all time well-liked sports movies.

So this year a novel dvd version is being released that is being called the Director’s prick. Apparently there are 20 minutes of unique footage added in, but the editing results in a film that is only 6 minutes longer than the new. The chief dissimilarity between the two versions is that the backstory is relayed primarily through flashback from the “expose”, as Roy Hobbs returns to his childhood home after 16 years away. He retrieves “Wonder Boy”, then goes to Unusual York to inaugurate his career with the NY Knights.

The novel version works okay, but I frankly preferred the unusual. I preferred its slightly more deliberate pacing, and I don’t deem the modern scenes (primarily extended versions of already existing scenes) added any dependable value or perspective. Indeed, one scene in which Memo travels to meet Roy on the road actually detracted from the cohesion of the myth.

Bottom line: if you loved the current, you’ll like this one. It’s unexcited basically the same film. I fair don’t contemplate it needed any tinkering.
